Description

September is an issue of contrasts – appropriate for the season. Although Britten wrote little for the organ we couldn’t omit such a prestigious composer’s work, and are therefore pleased that Paul Spicer has contributed an appreciation of Britten’s choral music. Caleb Jarvis and William Russell are less-known as composers but clearly are held in esteem by Dr Hugh Morton, Dr A.H. Claire and Dr Gillian Ward Russell. Stephen D. Smith has written an appraisal of the renovation by Harrison & Harrison at the Temple Church, London. The complete stop list appears on the last page – it felt enormous whilst setting that page!

The title which kept the Editor most entertained during setting was John Norman’s Don’t deafen the congregation. Here he explains more about acoustics and how best to make an organ sound (not keep it in a box).
